Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry that deals with the arrangement of teeth in dental arches and the guidance of jaws to harmonious positions with one another, aiming at restoring the proper function of the mouth and achieving pleasant facial aesthetics.

In particular, skeletal problems that are diagnosed during early childhood and adolescence can be treated by orthodontic techniques that will lead to beneficial changes in the shape of the face, equivalent to changes that plastic surgery can achieve in adults. The effectiveness of orthodontics is due to its ability to harness the adolescent growth phase to guide the jaws to their proper positions.

In adult patients, orthodontic problems that were not addressed at an early age can be corrected through adult orthodontics. Severe skeletal problems can also be treated with a combination of orthodontics and surgery.

Orthodontics is one of the more established specializations of dental science and is equivalent to a medical specialization. To be certified in the practice of orthodontics requires a DDS and furthermore attendance of three years’ Orthodontics Graduate Program at University Dentistry Departments.

The Orthodontics License is awarded by the Ministry of Health and Welfare after Board type examinations. Only those licensed from the Ministry have the right to use this title.

In an effort to upgrade the level of practice of Orthodontics in Europe, the European Orthodontic Society has established the European Board of Orthodontists. In order to be admitted to the Board, a practicing Orthodontist has to present the treatment of several difficult patient cases and pass a rigorous examination. This is equivalent to the institution of Medical Board Certification in the USA. Dr. Zarbi is a Member of the European Board of Orthodontists since 2000.
